An 8-year-old Chicago girl riding a scooter was fatally shot in the head by a man who was upset over noise, witnesses said.

“It just didn’t make sense. None of it made sense,” a neighbor, Megan Kelley, told the Chicago Sun-Times. “Everybody in the community would just tell him they are just kids having fun playing. Just let them be.”

The shooting happened Saturday night in Chicago’s Portage Park neighborhood. Police were at the suspect’s apartment building Sunday, interviewing people and collecting evidence, hours after the death of Sarabi Medina.

“Before he shot her, he had said something about them being too loud,” Kelley said.

After the shooting, the gunman was tackled by Sarabi’s father and shot during a struggle, according to a police report. He was taken to a hospital.

“He ran over there, football-tackled this guy,” community activist Andrew Holmes said.

Chicago police spokesman Tom Ahern said prosecutors were reviewing the case for charges Monday. Stuffed animals and sunflowers were placed at the base of a tree near the shooting scene.

“With great sadness, we are devastated at the loss of another young life,” the Chicago school district said in a statement.

  1. This is so horrible, so sad. We should finally wake up listen to the NRA who understand that the only reasonable way to prevent more stories like this is more guns. Because the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. If only the little girl had a gun. If only.

  2. @M, I assume you’re being sarcastic. If you are, I agree with you. I know all frum people are supposed to think alike and all parrot what right wing talk show hosts say, but as far as guns are concerned I am an exception. This is an example of why I agree with those who want to limit guns. i know that many bad guys will get guns despite the laws. And I know that good guys who had guns have stopped the bad guys. But I know too many “good guys” whom I wouldn’t want to own guns, such as the man in this story. You know that guy in shul who has a short temper? Do you want him to have a gun? Do you want your children to play at a friend’s house where there is a gun?

  3. @lakewoodbubby, yes I was being sarcastic, and I agree with everything you wrote. We should consider restrictions on gun availability that would largely not infringe on second amendment rights and yet would decrease access, so that fewer bad guys — and also good guys that sometimes have bad days — will use these deadly weapons to end the lives of others. If the mishna assers raising dangerous animals (and of course there’s good reason to own them, hence the need to asser them), it can’t be only a woke/liberal thing to suggest that owning guns might be frowned upon too.

  4. If you want to know the facts about gun control, I suggested book called More Guns, Less Crime, which was written by a sociologist who also used to think that stricter gun laws reduces crime, yet the facts show the opposite to be true.

The chance of the gun in this case, being a legal, licensed weapon, is somewhere between zero and 1%. Gun laws only remove gun from law abiding citizens. They do nothing to stop the law breakers from obtaining weapons; that’s what good borders do.

  5. I don’t believe in gun control, only that responsible people are the only ones who should have guns, not sick psychos who shoot kids for making noise.
