Does anyone know where the minhag to wish mazel tov by simchos come from? And why specifically these words?
June 16, 2023 3:39 pm at 3:39 pm #2200433Reb EliezerParticipantMaybe there is an argument in Shabbis 156 lwhether there is a mazel for Jews. We pasken that we are above the mazel as we can change it through tefila or maasim tovim, so we wish one that it should stay as it is good and not be changed.
June 16, 2023 3:39 pm at 3:39 pm #2200441Reb EliezerParticipantRava in Moad Katan 28,1 says that children. the length of life and sustinance is dependent on the mazel but it can be changed as above and deducted from one’s zechusim.
June 16, 2023 3:40 pm at 3:40 pm #2200444Reb EliezerParticipantTefila will not affect the zechusim.
June 16, 2023 3:42 pm at 3:42 pm #2200461amiricanyeshivishParticipantIt seems like I am not the only one who can’t find the mekor. lol
Also wondering how old this minhag is? Do we find such words in Chazal for wellwishing? I know we say it by Kiddush Levanah but couldn’t find source for that either…..June 16, 2023 7:20 pm at 7:20 pm #2200523commonsaychelParticipantYou really need to get a life

June 19, 2023 12:35 am at 12:35 am #2201012yechiellParticipantor say “you are making a big, big mistake” . just kidding.
June 20, 2023 11:56 am at 11:56 am #2201563yeshivaguy45ParticipantI don’t know if this is an actual mekor, but we find in the Chumash that when Leah Imeinu gave the name Gad, Rashi there says “Ba Mazel Tov” (Beraishis 30:11)
June 20, 2023 12:52 pm at 12:52 pm #2201567Reb EliezerParticipantMayne this might explain why Gad is always out of place in the beginning of Bamidbar and the meraglim as we should be above the mazel.
