ADA, I’ll be taking you up on that advice, Yabia, sorry to disappoint you. As for depression, I wouldn’t really class it as that. COVID really took a huge toll on me personally and professionally. And I’ve just been really beaten down by all of it. I’m making headway out, but it’s almost like I’m afraid to be hopeful after two terrible years. I saw an awful lot of death and destruction. But I appreciate the concern though, really. I’m pulling out of it slowly but surely.

UJM, Thanks… I’ve been lurking about, just too lazy or depressed to really comment on much. the last few years really beat the stuffing outta me. Yabia, as soon as I finish going through everything I’d be happy to get them to you or anyone. Of course meetups/personal info aren’t exactly condoned by mods as far as I remember.

I vaguely remember a shul drop off.

    Thanks for popping in.

What if tuition breaks were not breaks, but rather deferments, that you paid off with monthly contributions to the school even after your kids were out? This way there’d be a revenue stream that’s not dependant the on current enrollment of the school. This could be modified by each persons financial situation, such as a taper off towards the end of the obligation. So for example: you have 3 kids in school at 10k each (just an arbitrary number for now, but remember, you wouldnt have these 18k tuitions with funds still coming in from families whose kids have graduated) your obligation is 30k a year for the next 10 years. (I know, at some point one or more kids has left thus screwing up the math a bit, but for simplicitys sake, let’s just use this base number for 10 years.) So you can afford 15k a year paid in 10, $1500 installments over the year, but the other 15k is deferred. After 10 years, you’ve accrued a debt of 150k, which if you continue to pay at $1500 a month (like you’ve been able to do all along) you’ll knock it out in another 10 years (or 8 if you make a payment for all 12 months in a year). Just a thought, what do you think? Of course, the real math is more complicated. This is just a 3am musing…..

“The MO and MO communities cause otherwise religious people to find ways to violate the halachah and have it accepted by those around them”

    Patently ridiculous.

“let me save you some time: yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying and I’ve always said it openly here”

Doesnt make it any less of a ridiculous opinion.

This conversation off into the weeds and has lost its utility. Good luck Yoyo.

“… or if you eat at non-certified vegetarian or non-meat restaurants”

And your fragmented thought is implying what exactly? I’m kidding, I’m well aware of what you’re implying. You’re trying to use the far left of observance of MO to be the rule for the whole. And it’s a feeble attempt, and it’s not relevant to the conversation, because the super majority of the Jewish population in those towns are NOT far left in observance. In fact there has been and continues to be a steady march to the right for many years now. So, back to actual topic at hand (and brushing aside the prob mechilah you have to ask of thousands of fully frum jews) the communities I have listed would fit very well with what the OP indicated was his desired neighborhood.

J, it depends. Most are pretty generous with discounts and scholarships. And generally depends on the grade. Elementary is far cheaper than high school. You could expect 5 to 8 thousand a child though. (This is a massive generalization YRMV) But the tradeoff that is understood is that your home is a fraction of the price of Brooklyn. You could buy 2 moderate or 1 stunning home in these neighborhoods for far less than the price of your average semi-detached, shared driveway, postage stamp sized Marine Park home. Forget places like flatbush proper. And the folks in these areas really dont care a whit if you go to movies, or wear a bekeshe to shul, or daven N. Ari, or eat Triangle K. (All those issues not up for discussion, just furnishing examples of tolerance) you’re a Jew and you’re welcome.

Joseph, are we reading the same post??

“I’m a former yeshiva guy, and have been working for several years. I would be considered more ‘balebatish’ by most people. For example, I would technically wear clothes other than black pants and white shirts, go to movies occasionally, let my kids watch movies”

Those towns are EXACTLY what he is looking for. (While Teaneck proper IS expensive, its surrounding neighbors in the “Teaneck community” are not).

As for this statement “Teaneck and the other towns in that comment are thorough and through MO, something the OP isn’t seeking”

Thats through and through wrong. You clearly havent spent any significant amount of time in these areas. And again with the throwing out of “MO” as a pejorative.
yoyo, spend a shabbos in the towns I listed, you wont be disappointed and youll meet some really great people.

“Elizabeth, Teaneck, Hillside and Linden are, if I’m not mistaken, MO. Which isn’t what the OP is looking for.”

Actually, that’s exactly what hes looking for. Without the pejorative connotation of “MO” of course. I’ve visited all these neighborhoods while looking for a place to live, and wound up in one of them. And I am pretty much observantly in line with what the OP wrote. These beauty I found in each of those communities was that you have the ability to be pretty much whatever you want to be on the spectrum of observance, and no one really judged you for it. Cholov stam? Sure. Black hat? Sure. Movies? Whatever…. it was a machayah I tell you, to meet people like that.

For me, I think my unease with flying as opposed to driving is the fact that if something catastrophic happens in a car, it’s pretty much over and done with relatively quickly. With unconsciousness and or worse happening immediately. Something catastrophic happens in the air…..well, you now have 7000ft of falling and screaming to think about what’s about what happens next…. (OMG…just a joke!!)

But yes, its completely irrational. Remember:

Just a generalization here…….FCC fines are usually monetarily hefty, and some offenses may even come with jail time. I would imagine, that while LEGALLY a non-LEO or FCC official cannot confiscate even a $30 Chinese radio (which at this point are generally all FCC type certified) , I would imagine that the alternative of having the perpetrators (and parents) info forwarded to the FCC for a formal complaint with the resultant fines assessed is a far worse choice. IMHO I would offer the kids/parents the choice: voluntarily give the radios to Hatzolah and/or destroy them, or face the formal complaint and resultant fines. Just as a quick example (without getting too technical) a simple setting on these radios colloquially called “narrowbanding” that is set improperly can incur a $10,000 fine PER OCCURRENCE. IE: for each time the PTT button is pressed. The FCC doesn’t fool around. look at their enforcements page. Hopefully this whole publicized incident will deter others from interfering with Hatzolahs activities.

“the Vollys PRETEND they are professionals and act like them”

Quite possibly the most ridiculous statement in this thread. Simply because by the admission of the author….”I listed 3 cases, where I was present, where s/o called Hatzolah, and they decided that the pt. didn’t need transport. 2 of them definitely did (btw, Im assuming you also assessed those pt’s and then either took them to the hospital yourself or summoned a 911 unit) but I wasn’t able to follow up on the third one.”…… admitting to knowledge of only .021% of just Flatbush Hatzolah’s call volume, let alone the entire NY Hatzolah system. Totally believable and statistically relevant…… oy. Why is there no sarcasm markup?? Oh well. I really have to be done with this thread. But every time I think I’m out….na’arishkeit pulls me back in!!

    “I haven’t evaluated them yet.”

So many comments to address…can’t quote them all. But suffice it to say the following:

    1) Health, your experience with Hatzolah was terribly unfortunate. None of us know the circumstances so in truth we can’t ever REALLY know what happened. What we DO know is that many thousands of people have been helped selflessly by competent friends/neighbors/strangers who dropped what they were doing to help us/our families out. Unfortunate circumstances and cases does not undo that. Consider the famous case of the unfortunate FF so many years ago who had an undetected, Hatzolah performed,
esophageal intubation (I think that’s what it was) who ended up dying. Terrible, yes. Still doesn’t undo the years worth of help they’ve provided pre and post incident.

    2) Given the admittedly fraction of calls that you’re privy to, in which there was a bad outcome, does not reflect on the general competency of an organization that’s many hundreds strong. Even if we feel that bad outcome was the result of what we perceive as negligence or carelessness. The statistical numbers simply don’t allow for that.

    3) There is a percieved notion that somehow volunteers are “less” than their paid cohorts. As you well know, the initial educational requirements are the same for both camps, as are the recert requirements. And don’t think for even a second that paid servicemembers spend even an iota of time more than the minimum required on CME activities. They don’t. As of now, I am unaware of any studies regarding the competence of paid vs volunteer.

    4) In my experience, no one will ever care for you as much as your friends, neighbors, and “landsman”. I’m not putting down the muni’s, but some guy from some town, 150 miles away, riding a truck in the city….simply doesn’t have the same urgency in his step as your neighbor does. This is not a “Jewish” thing, I’ve seen this repeated over and over in paid services around the country. Local volunteers always seem to have a sense of urgency (sorry for the double use of the word) when they are caring for people of their locality. It’s a natural instinct. I want to make clear though, I do believe that many many EMS pros are caring and competent techs, I just think it comes more naturally when you do it for your own locale.

    5) As I’ve stated before, the rate of incompetence (IMHO and agreed to by you) is pretty stable throughout all EMS agencies. And whether you’ve witnessed it or not, Hatzolah has pretty much the same remediation scheme and disciplinary processes as other agencies. Do bad eggs get through….yeah, same as EMS. Do some folks pull “protektzia” …..maybe. I’m not particularly ware of any cases, despite having been around way too long for my own good. And if it is happening…..once again, same as in EMS. I know the Chief, the borough commander…..the lieutenant……its exactly the same.

    6) The age of the internet has made knowledge extremely accessible. One can have information immediately available, that previously took years of study and understanding. So just a small piece of advice, no matter what type of practitioner you are, or claim to be, Cutting and pasting chunks of medical info from websites is a poor way to bolster your point in an argument because even at the very best, it still undermines your perceived authenticity. At worst, it makes you seem a common liar.

As an aside, I am curious. If paid services, or muni’s should be trusted more because of their call volume and/or experience, and options for recourse…..why go to bat for EN? [Mind you, my PERSONAL feeling is that they should’ve been incorporated into Hatzolah (for logistical reasons), and if not, I have no problem with them being an independent agency either.] EN doesn’t (or wont) have the same percieved problems as Hatzolah?

Further proving your Internet Doctor status….. and the perils of following distilled medical websites. You’re not even smart enough to follow up on direct sources. I feel bad for your patientz a d coworkers, they have no idea of what a nudnick poser they’ve trusted with their care.

PS: Do some more research. I’ll even give you a hint. Try The Lancet where the (non anecdotal) randomized controlled trial was published, or NCBI, or PubMed. I’ll bet You didn’t even know what the disorder was till you googled it. Laughable.

What’s clear is that you haven’t the foggiest idea about how EMS really works, your critique of Hatzolah is amateurish and sophomoric, and ive established (for myself at least) that your grasp of critical care is junior grade. I would love to be an ophthalmologist, they’re well paid. But as predicted in my earlier comment, you have strayed from direct, on topic answers, and have devolved into reflexive defensive mocking and insults. Which really leaves us at the conclusion that: you have some personal bias against Hatzolah that colors your outlook. And having that bias is ok, as long as you’re intellectually honest with yourself and own up to it and not try to clothe it with an air of respectability and authority.

Any problem with any EMS Call becomes News. It’s Not hidden!
    A) Wrong. Proof you are not someone in the loop.

What doesn’t paint me in a rational light?
    A) bizarrely claiming to know FOR CERTAIN” that Hatzolah has no internal procedures for tracking care, when it CLEARLY does and pretty much HAS to as a condition of being an ALS provider. But you wouldn’t know that as you are generally ignorant of at least pre-hospital medicine.

So why are you defending them? Unless you’re a Wannabe & gonna show them this YWN topic.
    A) because I like exposing ignorance and bias when I see it, and YOU are clearly biased.

    Who says I didn’t?!?
    A) well, you seem to only have a bit of knowledge about some case you’ve “heard” about…And when called to the carpet about anything else, you suddenly recall “first hand knowledge” of other cases where they caused the death of a patient. Well, now that’s just suspicious. And probably not the truth.

What??? You obviously don’t know American Law.

    A) I do, and it was meant ethically. As in the subject directly leading to that sentence. Reading comprehension….try it.

LOL. With this line you surely belong in the Chevra!
    You’re right – only they know medicine & I don’t.

    A) given previous conversations we’ve had, you likely don’t understand critical care or emergency medicine, even if you think you do because you’ve taken ACLS a few times.

You’re getting funnier by the minute!

Thank you, I certainly try. I also expect that browbeating and insults will soon follow on this thread. As is your MO. Now, given the wealth of information you do NOT posess, I feel this is a mismatched battle as you are unarmed. And so I bid you adieu……

“That’s where I disagree! In the case I just mentioned, the Goyim would get rid of them & maybe other consequenses.”

And how would you know this? Are you a QA/QI manager? Do you run an EMS agency? You are welcome to disagree with facts and statistics, but it certainly doesn’t paint you in a rational light

“And I know of other cases where your group….”
My “group”? And what group would that be? Jews? Bodybuilders? Vegetarians? Ah….yes I am being facetious…you mean Hatzolah members, but I am not one.

“caused death – first hand knowledge”

Well if you witnessed mal, mis, or nonfeasence , then you have a moral and ethical imperative to report that. Otherwise you are complicit. But I’m going to go out on a limb and surmise that you don’t have any real information to share as you probably didn’t witness anything, or if you did, didn’t understand the nature of what was being done. Though you will certainly answer me that “I have more medical knowledge than you, and etc etc etc…..” which is unlikely.

CAD – “.it must not have happened,”

    That’s your False assumption.

There is no false assumption, you’ve staked a claim about an issue that you admit you have no information about other than some case you’ve “heard” about. You aren’t in Hatzolah, and never were (your admission) You are not part of their QA/QI process. You are not in a management position there. You are not on every call. And Hatzolah doesn’t report to you. Yet you feel confident that if YOU didn’t hear about a disciplinary action, there was none. This is very silly. Do you hear of FDNY’s disciplinary proceedings? Are you in the loop of say……Midwood’s terminations? Are you somehow in the know about NYU’s ALS remediation list? How about OLOM’s? Sinai? RPS? Presby? Anyone? I’m going to go out on a limb here and posit that the answer is no. That doesn’t mean its not happening, does it? What Hatzolah offers is at the very least, on par with any EMS system.

“only case of termination that I heard….”

And therein lies the problem. You believe that if YOU didn’t hear of it….it must not have happened, or was some sort of cover up. Well, I am personally aware of ramifications to members who were found clinically (or morally) lacking. I think this is simply just a case of “not enough information” on your part. As you’ve said….you were never a member.

“But other agencies have options that deal with incompetence”

So does Hatzolah. From remediation classes , to practice under observation, to restriction of privileges, to suspension, to termination. Its all there, much like every other BLS/ALS organization. Does it catch everyone? No, but neither does the 911 system’s QA/QI. Incompetence falls through the cracks sometimes, in EVERY organization.

This thread is amusing. Having participated in almost every aspect of pre-hospital care, public, private, and volunteer, I can safely say the rate of incompetence amongst all agencies is pretty constant despite Health’s assertions that Hatzolah is some sort of “idiot magnet” for incompetent personnel. IMHO, “The lady doth protest too much, methinks”
