Netspark is ok, but it seems to work as a VPN or similar as every page seems to load twice.
I would not recommend GenTech for kids, as things slip throughMarch 4, 2019 12:33 pm at 12:33 pm #1688938inromParticipantdoes anyone know why k9 allows youtube when it is supposed to be blocked? thanks.

I use rimon.March 4, 2019 1:12 pm at 1:12 pm #1688963JosephParticipantK9 hasn’t been updated in about five years. Does it block inappropriate sites that are newer than its last update?
March 4, 2019 1:12 pm at 1:12 pm #1688964👑RebYidd23ParticipantInrom, K9 mostly works, but it is still old software that isn’t guaranteed. If you want to block a particular website, there are ways to do that without getting a filter.
March 4, 2019 2:39 pm at 2:39 pm #1688998s054ParticipantCisco umbrella Prosumer, works great and quick, only $20 per year for 3 devices (not for android)
Kapersky safekids for android, free
March 4, 2019 4:05 pm at 4:05 pm #1689050YsiegelParticipantI use Netspark for Android, which is on the one hand excellent for the purposes it is built for, but on the other hand can get slightly buggy at times. It works with a VPN, which is a huge advantage, I think, over others…and I use the Chabad beis din as admins so it keeps the device fairly choked up to the minimum (with the extended plan still offering plenty to work with). I found a loophole that works on my phone, and they fixed it for a while but recently they removed the fix, which is annoying but I won’t make a fuss about it again…
I was seriously considering getting the version of Gentech for Android phones which basically erases all of your apps except for a few pre-selected ones that are essential, but they don’t include essential apps for Israel, and therefore I can’t do with it.
On my PC I have Gentech, which is excellent and had several advantages, with one weakness (in my opinion) being that it doesn’t use VPN like Netspark does (which means that it is open to loopholes…). But it does the job wonderfully, all in all.
I used K9 for a while, but found that it is ridiculously easy to bypass. I have heard in the passed of a very expensive, yet absolutely top-of-the-line filter, which works better than even Rimon (which isn’t enough to stop the absolute tech-savy obsessive from bypassing). There was this site which went through every single possible loophole for a filter, and why they, as professionals, were able to develop a filter which is indestructible.
Anyways, because of its price I quickly forgot about it…

Never heard of it. Care to share?March 4, 2019 9:52 pm at 9:52 pm #1689168Sam KleinParticipantNo filter.
Let yourself be a filter and ONLY USE THE WEB FOR YOUR REAL NEEDS like your email, buying something online etc… and a little news (your family comes before reading news or coffeeroom)
March 4, 2019 11:47 pm at 11:47 pm #1689185ftresiParticipantFor home Internet, Clean Router is a good choice. It replaces your router and filters every device that connects to your network. There’s another similar one called Kibosh which is quite a bit cheaper but is very similar. Kiboshs mobile filter is not very good. Clean Router also has one but I can’t comment on it. I had gentech for a time. It is VERY expensive and not worth the high price tag. A particular frum Internet safety organization recommends Gentech but. I disagree. There are better and cheaper alternatives. I wonder how much gentech is paying them to steer people to their product
March 5, 2019 12:36 am at 12:36 am #1689199LucyParticipantIm confused why people proudly announce they have no filter. No Rabbanim condone that.
Not a maalah to be your own filterMarch 5, 2019 12:48 am at 12:48 am #1689202JosephParticipantMeshimer, Gentech and Geder all use Livigent as their underlying technology, as I understand. They each use different settings to decide what and how to filter. Livigent is considered to be one of the strongest, if not strongest, filters on the market.
March 5, 2019 1:36 am at 1:36 am #1689209BisBoyParticipantI don’t check hechsherim, I really on my natural filters to only chew what’s kosher. I’m publisizing this so that others should follow as well.
March 5, 2019 1:36 am at 1:36 am #1689210BisBoyParticipantNot only do they go against halacha, they announce it in public so that others who don’t have the imaginable “filter” and are struggling, should learn from them and fall.
March 5, 2019 6:02 am at 6:02 am #1689223leaperParticipantI use NATIVUSA and I am very happy with them, good options and great support, and a good pricing.
For those who need more open internet, there is a great filter called OPENDNS, it has a free version and filters only the real garbage, and you dont feel it at all. (I used to use it at work)
For those that boast with not having a filter at all. you guys are CRAZY!! a minumum basic filter SAVES LIVES! not only Neshmos but also the Guf.
There are so many pepole out there that their lives are messed up cause of non filtered internet.
DO THE MINIMUM TO PROTECT YOUR SELF AND YOUR FAMILY!!!March 5, 2019 8:41 am at 8:41 am #1689244hershel2626ParticipantI check hechsherim because the Torah makes specific and explicit reference to kosher food. Please quote me exactly where the Torah tells us we need an Internet filter. Like others, I use the filter the eibishte put in my head, i.e. my brain.

March 5, 2019 8:47 am at 8:47 am #1689288LucyParticipantIs thier a halacha to only eat food with a hechsher? You eat food with hechsherim becausr you cannot insure that the food is kosher otherwise.
March 9, 2019 11:06 pm at 11:06 pm #1691883JosephParticipantAre there any free Android filters that are effective?
March 11, 2019 2:25 pm at 2:25 pm #1692881SteveParticipantFor all those that say you dont need a filter the mishna in pirkei avos says ain apitropis l’arayos which means that if you dont set boundaries to protect yourself you are or will come to watch bad things whether you Google it yourself or it pops up on your phone. I use netspark from tag which filters very well but it slowed my phone down

I don’t either.
March 13, 2019 8:42 am at 8:42 am #1694999JosephParticipantHow do the standards/enforcement/blocking differences compare between the various different filters?
Do they block bad content within apps? How do they treat unrecognized websites? Do they block pictures of skin/people? Who enforces which sites can be unblocked?
March 14, 2019 10:03 pm at 10:03 pm #1696404lzParticipantWe use K9 with pretty strict settings (I do whitelist certain sites) and I accidentally-on-purpose forgot the password so whenever I need to allow something I have to go open up my junk email and find the temporary one, which is a hock. Also I have an adblocker. I consider it to be a pretty good filter for a woman, especially since I don’t have a smartphone and don’t have too many hours available in the day to get sidetracked online. My husband doesn’t know the password to the computer and I need to sign him in whenever he wants to use it, so he only uses it when I’m home (though if he really needs something during the day, he can go to the public library and use the very public computers there, which is a fine filter as well).
I think it’s crazy for a man to have unfiltered internet access. Not that you’re a bad person but why set yourself up like that? It’s an easy geder to make.March 14, 2019 10:11 pm at 10:11 pm #1696411JosephParticipantI understand that K9 doesn’t filter non-tznius pictures.
March 15, 2019 12:57 pm at 12:57 pm #1696578Yserbius123ParticipantOpenDNS which covers my whole WiFi including phones and PCs.
March 15, 2019 3:27 pm at 3:27 pm #1696675JosephParticipantOpenDNS doesn’t protect your phone when you’re outside of home, Yseribus. Then you’re totally unfiltered.
Even within the home OpenDNS doesn’t block inappropriate images.
Whatever protection it does provide is only as good as whoever at OpenDNS decides what falls into what categories. Random American goyim in California aren’t reliable for a Yiddishe neshomo. And then whoever setup OpenDNS for you chooses which categories to block. Or not to block.
Then who has the password to override the filter? If yourself, the filter isn’t very effective.
All the above applies to OpenDNS, K9 and most other user controlled filters.
March 17, 2019 1:36 pm at 1:36 pm #1697116takahmamashParticipant“Im confused why people proudly announce they have no filter. No Rabbanim condone that.”
For all the “chareidim” here who claim to follow this or that Rebbe, shlit”a, or this or that Rosh Yeshiva, shlit”a – none of their Rebbiem would allow their followers to be on this website, let alone be on the internet for non-parnassa reasons. So all the people on the internet, even with filters, well, that defeats the whole reason of “following a Rebbe” to begin with.

That’s simply not true. There are some who don’t, but many who do.

January 26, 2023 7:01 am at 7:01 am #2159777farfetchedpshatParticipantIn the spirit of Shovavim, I have been using the free version of Qustodio’s filter for some time now, and they seem to be a solid choice for Windows.
February 11, 2023 8:40 pm at 8:40 pm #2164970chanarochelParticipantHi!
Is Qustodio easy to install and customize? I want to stay away from youtube, but occasionally there are videos — for instance, on cooking — that I’d like to be able to view. Would you recommend it? Thanks.
A. Eller
February 12, 2023 7:13 pm at 7:13 pm #2165197farfetchedpshatParticipantI found it very easy to install. They offer what’s called a “blacklist” and a “whitelist”, for completely blocking or allowing specific websites, and categories that could be allowed or blocked as well (e.g. News, Sports, Entertainment, etc.)
As for within YouTube, there are no customization options with the free version, only with the paid, premium version. You can allow or completely block the site.
