You might want to consult a Rav who also may have some academic/professional credentials in addition to semicha on your overall financial plan and risk tolerance BUT clearly you don’t want someone with no financial training or experience in financial markets to be doing your asset allocations or selecting individual funds/stocks for your portfolio. Your Rav may also be aware of someone in the tzibur or who davens at your shul who does have the requisite skills who you might want to consider as your financial advisor.

    Dr. E.

There are several regular CR posters who are likely among the lamud vov tzadikim and would be excellent candidates to serve on the selection committee, assuming one is ever convened. Clearly, there could be no electronic voting machines or absentee ballots allowed

So they cancelled the election and declared R’ Shternbuch to be the new head of the Eidah. Apparently, no one objected (or at least no one was willing to voice any concerns).

Many gentiles are worried that just calling someone a “Jew” these days, has sadly taken on accusatory, pejorative, anti-semitic connoations and thus feel the Jewish Person reference is more socially correct. Clearly, its a semantic distinction w/o a difference. I’m agnostic and just allow the individual to use whatever terminology they are more comfortable with. I recall my daughter at one point had a T-shirt with a “Proud Jew” logo after some local anti-semitic incident years ago….”Proud Jewish Person” sounds just a bit too woke.

Pew is probably one of the best survey research firms in the U.S. The questions they asked were clearly not sufficiently detailed to drill down into whether someone who considers themselves “orthodox” really meets our understanding of the term. Sometime asking these questions does not ask to see proof of milah, whether the mesader kiddushin was qualified to do so, whether there is a “jewish” mother going back several generations etc. Nor do they confront those being surveyed with the inherent contradiction of keeping kosher at home but eating treifus outside the home etc.
The point here is to highlight broad trends over time, not to provide a statistically accurate snapshot in time.

Its not that the stories of gadolim are not per se entertaining, its that many parents lack the communication skills to present them in a way to capture and sustain the interests of a young child. In some cases presenting them on videos or other means can overcome these constraints.

Q: Why not entertain kids with stories of tzadikim?

A: Because most young children don’t find such stories “entertaining”.

SCOTUS has substantially reduced the number of class actions in FEDERAL courts in recent years by making it more difficult to certify a class at the district court level. That doesn’t solve the problem in state courts where a larger number of these cases are being filed.

in reply to: Tort Reform #2209984

For reasons CTLawyer so eloquently stated, any type of meaningful tort reform is DOA in most state legislative bodies because of the numbers of attorneys in those bodies, but even more importantly, the massive dollars the plaintiffs bar contribute to candidates and PACs. Some of the worst examples are Texas and Mississippi which are the venues of choice for class actions and individual tort actions. Also popular is California which enacts all sorts of crazy regulatory requirements which then trigger thousands of complaints of de minimis violaitons. The worst example (or best if you are a plaintiffs lawyer) are for violations of the California version of the ADC where small businesses are constantly sued for “inaccessible” bathrooms and counters, etc. The Supreme Court has made it a bit more difficult to bring class actions in federal courts but has little control over the states.

Nothing I know of at Niagara Falls but if you are willing to drive about 30 minutes, there is a kosher deli in Amherst, just outside of Buffalo. I was there about 18 months ago when we got ticket to a Bills football game and it was a small takeout deli with lots of kosher groceries. Its hidden in one of the big local grocery markets so you have to do a bit of searching to find it.

in reply to: Outrageous auto insurance premiums #2209356
    Gadolhadorah

Average auto insurance rates in the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic states increased roughly 25% from 2022/2023 according to state regulators. In general, the underwriting process works on the basis of overall loss/payout experience in each jurisdiction (rates are approved on a state by state basis) with certain formula driven adders/reductions for individual risk factors. Cars that are “garaged” or not driven to work (typically 15 miles each way) will have much lower rates than average just as adding a teen-age driver or multiple claims will ratchet up rates considerably. As noted above, drivers w/o any claims will still find premiums spiking. Changing insurance companies might save several hundred dollars but if you’ve had really good experience with your current company, it might be worth paying up for the quality of service and predictability.

“The rapid decline in the quality of the children of the last generations may in fact be affected by the lack of parental continuity during the summer. It will be hard to prove otherwise so the fact that this hefker has been going on for 70 years does not prove anything…”

I respectfully disagree with your point about the “rapid decline” of kids in the most recent generation. While there are issues unique to each generation, I think today’s kids are much more comfortable with their yiddishkeit and more capable of functioning in a world full of challenges than the post-War generation in which many of us grew up

Yungerman: An aron that would fit two sifrei torah would probably be at least 40-48 inches wide and 36 inches high and 12 inches deep. A “safe” or steel case that size would likely be really heavy and expensive If theft-proof and fire-proof not a concern, then an aluminum or even polymer wall cabinet meant for garage storage or even a tall kitchen wall cabinet with the doors removed (to make it lighter) and replaced by some fabric covering that would slide open/closed.

“I never understood how parents who keep a watchful chinuch eye on their children all year, hand them over to a 19 year old to be the mechanech for 2 months. Does the director really know if the counselor is 100% mentally stable?

Yidden have been shipping their yinglach to summer camp for at least 70-80 years and I’m not sure I recall any cases of a 19yo counselor attacking the kids in his bunk and cutting off their peyos with a chainsaw. Indeed, I suspect that in many cases, the counselors are more mentally stable than the parents (at least judging by my recollections of parental behavior on visiting day).

Sadly, BOTH parties are currently pathetic relics of what once were two reasonably sane political movements that disagreed on policy issues but were able to coalesce around bipartisan themes for the good of the country. …just my personal view that the Republicans have so twisted themselves to support the abomination that formerly occupied the oval office that I find great optimism with the moderate Dems.

Yeshivish: Good news for the Jews!!. A frum yid who asks for “accommodation” to leave early eruv shabbos, take off on Yom-Tovim, offer to make up time on Sunday etc. will be better off. An employer will have to show that it would incur substantial costs and/or service interruptions to deny such a request. As noted in an earlier post, this decision may indirectly result in employers not hiring frum yidden in the first place but once they are employed, the firm must make a reasonable effort to accommodate their religious needs.

On a serious note, as Amil Zola noted, if there is a silver lining in these few days of air pollution in the Northeast, its that it provides those of us on the east coast a sense of what folks on the west coast have been living with for years. We were hiking in the Columbia River gorge (between Washington and Oregon) in the Summer of 2021 and encountered some of the most incredibly polluted air from fires in BC and Washington state and the locals told us it wasn’t nearly as bad as some of their prior fire smoke episodes.

I was more intrested in why R’ Deutch, whom I had not heard referenced in years, was suddenly showing up at an Agudah sponsored asifah in Chicago for Yeshiva Bochurim. Perhaps he is now a regular speaker on some issues related to his “museum” but I just haven’t been following.

I did not intend for the OP to morph into a debate on the Rebbe, Z’L. I was more curious as to why a Lubavitch Rav would have been invited to speak at an Agudah gathering in Chicago which appears to have more focused on his expertise in matters related to historic artifacts and knowledge of animals referenced in the Torah than his lamdus in The Rebbe’s writings.

As usual, CTLawyer makes a critical point. A college degree for the wife is in the interests of BOTH parties, especially if the guy is planning to shteig 24×7 for even a few years. More importantly, it is essential going forward for the wife so she never feels at risk of having to stay in a dysfunctional relationship solely for economic reasons. Hopefully, that will never be an issue but certainly it will be a net positive when the time comes to pay multiple yeshiva tuitions, summer camp expenses, etc.

If a “Yeshivish Guy” wants to sit in Kollel or learn, obviously he is expecting his wife to provide parnassah for the family (unless the couple has wealthy parents willing to pick up the tab). While there are some exceptions, having a college degree (and sometimes a graduate degree) is almost universally a prerequisite to professions paying a good salary. If the guy wants his wife to pay the bills, she needs a college degree.

Does someone “keep score” as to which rabbonim have completed the 24 (or whatever one believes the number is) of seforim that constitute “Kol Hatorah Kulah”? Would a big talmid chacham who for whatever reason had only completed 22 or 23 of those seforim not be worthy of reciting the baracha referenced by DaMoshe. One might think the decision would be based on a wholistic assessment of the lamdus and other attributes of a particular Rav versus some numerical score of how many seforim had been mastered.
